Sharepoint 2010 offers a lot of new features over MOSS 2007. One of those is the List Threshold and throttling of Sharepoint lists. The maximum list items a view can return in MOSS 2007 was about 2000 items and any query over that number can result in low performance and load on the server. SharePoint 2010 lists has been optimized to support millions of items all together but provide SharePoint Administrators control over how many items are being retrieved from the lists at a time. This allow Sharepoint administrator to block running heavy queries on SharePoint Lists which has thousands of items.

The default threshold limit is 5000 and it's configured for each web application. It can be changed by navigating through this path Central Administration>Application management>Manage Web application>Click on the web app>General Settings > Resource Throttling

Settings you could set at 'Resource Throttling' :
1. List view Threshold - Limits the number of items stored on a list.
2. Object Model Override - Setthis to yes, if you want to override the threshold limit via object model. (Default:Yes).
3. List View Threshold forAuditors and Administrators – This is the maximum number of items in aview for a user who has sufficient permissions. (Default: 20000)
4. List View Lookup Threshold - The max number of columns thatcan be returned by a SPQuery object model.  (Default: 6)

The Threshold warning can be seen at the List Settings when the # items crosses the minimum threshold of items.
